The story of “Chervona Kalyna” (Red Viburnum)

Blossom Viburnum Berries
Red Viburnum is probably the most glorified tree in Ukrainian culture. Once, a long time ago, it was linked with the birth of the universe, fiery trio: Sun, Moon and Stars. Therefore, its name came from the ancient name of the Sun - "Kolo” (circle).
Red Viburnum (Latin: Viburnum Opulus) is high-branched tree 2-4 m high with gray bark. It grows along the rivers and reservoirs almost all over Ukraine and blossoms in May – June. Its fragrant flowers are large and white while its red berries that resemble drops of blood can be collected in September-October.
Sometimes, Red Kalyna is considered a symbol of Ukraine and its usage during autumn holidays, funerals, and other rituals determines its significance. Kalyna is also considered a "wedding tree" and Viburnum branches often decorate tables and wedding parties to signify the bonds of household and family.
In the world of art image, Red Kalyna is associated with viburnum - girl, viburnum – Ukraine, and viburnum - blood. This symbolic relationship of viburnum to Ukraine and blood is reflected in many rebel songs where Viburnum fruit became a symbol of courage of people who gave their lives fighting for Ukraine’s freedom.
